I’ve read many times that turning up in someone's feed reader at the same time on the same day every week makes a real difference to your blog traffic.

Surely people are so busy, they wouldn’t notice if you missed a few posts, would they?

I scan hundreds of blog posts every week. Do I miss someone if they don’t appear one week? If they’re one of my favourites then yes, it’s amazing, but I do. Even without being conscious of it, I know when to expect a new blog post or podcast from them. They are notable by their absence.

And, why are certain blogs my favourites? They turn up, week in week out, and produce great-quality content I want to read.

If you get to the point where your readers notice you’re not there, you know your content marketing is working.

What can we learn from successful bloggers who’ve remained consistent over many years?

  • The need for systems, workflows and tools comes up time and time again. Producing valuable content is hard work, whether you’re a seasoned pro or newbie. You need support to do it well, whether that comes in the form of people, processes or tools.
  • Being realistic about what you can achieve. Blogging is just one aspect of an online marketing strategy. Unless you run a professional blog, you don’t have all day every day to do this. Your blog is there to help you promote your business, not drain your time and energy.
  • The more you do it, the better you get. Producing any type of content consistently will exercise your creative muscles, making long-term consistency easier to achieve.
